The Truth About Sweeteners

There’s a whole lot of hype surrounding sweeteners.  Which sweeteners are the safest to use?  Which ones are the healthiest?   It can be really confusing.

Below is a list of healthy sweeteners.

The list begins with Raw Honey, which is the least processed and has the most health benefits.

 

RAW HONEY

Unprocessed, unheated, unfiltered honey direct from the comb.  Has tremendous medicinal properties.   I love Nature Nate’s 100% Pure, Raw and Unfiltered Honey.

DATE SYRUP

Organic date syrup is an antioxidant and contains antibacterial properties. It has been used internally and externally (topically) for healing.  Date Syrup has recently been shown to reduce the risk of cancer and lessen its impact.  Lior Organic Date Syrup is made from 100% organic dates.

COCONUT PALM SUGAR

Dehydrated crystals from the sap of the coconut palm and has a rich, brown sugar taste.  This one is organic and non-GMO.

XYLITOL

A natural sweetener made mostly from Birch or corn.  It is preferable to use Birch (hardwood) xylitol, since any xylitol made from corn is most probably made from GMO corn.  I have been using Xyla brand xylitol for over 5 years now.  It can be used cup for cup in baking and to sweeten smoothies and drinks.  I love it!

STEVIA

A natural sweetener made from the Stevia leaf.  Look for ingredients listing only Stevia and soluble fiber.  Nothing else should be added.  I use SweetLeaf .  A word of caution when using Stevia.  Using too much can cause a disruption of the menstrual cycle.

 

These Sweeteners are FAKE-OUTS

TRUVIA

Is produced by Coca-Cola.  Erythritol is its main ingredient.  Does not contain any actual Stevia, only a minuscule extract which does not contain any of the health benefits of the Stevia plant.  It also contains Natural Flavors, which could be anything as NFs are not regulated by the FDA.

SPLENDA/SUCRALOSE

The slogan “Made from sugar so it tastes like sugar” is extremely deceptive.  Three chlorine molecules are added to a sugar molecule, creating a molecule that does not exist in nature.  This ensures that the body cannot properly metabolize it, and therefore has no calories.  However, the chemicals are absorbed into your bloodstream and are stored in your fat.  Chlorine has been proven  numerous times as toxic to our bodies and accumulates in our bodies over time causing myriad health issues.

EQUAL/ASPARTAME

Research has shown that these chemicals actually encourage sugar cravings and sugar dependence, thereby raising your odds of unwanted weight gain.  Research has also shown artificial sweeteners promote insulin resistance and related health problems just like regular sugar does.  These products are linked to impaired metabolism and brain function.

AGAVE

Agave is highly processed and strips the nectar of all nutritional value. The end product contains more fructose than high fructose corn syrup! Even though agave (in its natural state) is touted as having a low glycemic index, this does not hold true for the highly processed end product.

STEVIA-IN-THE-RAW

Does not contain any actual Stevia, only a minuscule extract which does not contain any of the health benefits of the Stevia plant.  The main ingredient is dextrose, which is another name for sugar…
